Little Creatures Pale Ale

Little Creatures Pale Ale 01

The first time Christopher heard the song “Leaving Home”, by the band Jebediah, happened to be during the summer he moved out of home. Although, that coincidence played no part whatsoever in shaping his opinion of the song. It was an immensely popular tune at the time and came in at number ten in the following year’s Hottest 100. Not in Christopher’s books though. At the time, apart from not really identifying with any of the themes of the song, it was the derision inspired by the whiny, nasal tones of the vocalist, Kevin Mitchell, that did it for him. It used to make Christopher feel a tiny bit nauseous.

Upon hearing the opening line of that song during Jebediah’s set at Rock Above the Falls in 1997, Christopher and his girlfriend walked away and went to listen to some other forgettable band he had never heard of instead.

But with the wisdom of age comes an element of resigned tolerance mixed with lashings of nostalgia, and in recent years Christopher finds he is able to stand the rare listen, and sometimes even sings along to “Leaving Home” when he happens across it.

Viewed through the lens of hindsight and lessons learnt, Christopher supposed he had grown to appreciate Jebediah and “Leaving Home” for what they were.

That and Kevin Mitchell had toned down the nasal whininess!

In fact, in latter times, Christopher has even admitted to quite liking Mitchell’s solo stuff. Mitchell’s first solo-album, “Suburban Songbook”, written under the pseudonym, Bob Evans, now gets the occasional look-in during Christopher’s music-listening selections these days.

But he can only handle “Leaving Home” once, maybe twice a year at a stretch.
